New 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata

2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata Overview

New/Notable
  • Rear-wheel drive, two-seat convertible
  • 6-speed manual or automatic transmission
  • Balanced 50/50 weight distribution
The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata is a two-seat convertible that was redesigned last year. This year, it remains largely unchanged, but the new MX-5 Miata RF with a retractable rooftop makes its debut. It will be covered in a separate overview.

Three trims are available: the Sport, Club, and Grand Touring.

Also known as the “ND,” the fourth generation MX-5 Miata adheres to Mazda’s current “Kodo” design direction. Overall, it has more aggressive, sporty styling than its “cute” predecessors. Fluid, organic bodylines taper sharply at the ends for a more agile appearance. Circular taillights and a dual-exhaust tip at the rear-end are fun and sporty. LED headlights, LED taillights, daytime running lamps, power side mirrors, and 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels come standard. Larger 17-inch aluminum wheels are available as well.

Under the hood, the MX-5 Miata is powered by a standard 155-hp, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder SKYACTIV engine mated to a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. The EPA estimates fuel economy for the MX-5 Miata at 27/34 mpg city/highway with the manual, while the automatic version has a higher rating of 27/36 mpg. It also achieves a nearly perfect 50/50 weight distribution.

Inside, the MX-5 Miata has a sporty interior with circular air vents. The Miata also gets the same 7-inch LCD display mounted high up on the dash that is found in the Mazda3, which is operated with a rotary knob and buttons located between the two seats. Standard features include air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, push button start, a 3-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a USB port. Also available are navigation, a Bose premium audio system, heated seats, and leather upholstery.

Standard safety features include front and side impact airbags, antilock brakes, and electronic stability control. For those who want them, more safety technology is optional, including a blind spot warning system, rear cross traffic alerts, adaptive front lighting, lane departure warnings, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
