New 2017 Mazda Mazda6

2017 Mazda Mazda6 Overview

  • EPA-estimated 25/37 mpg city/highway
  • Standard side mirrors with turn signal indicators
  • New interior and safety features available
The 2017 Mazda Mazda6 is a mid-size sedan that was given a mid-cycle refresh last year. It competes with the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Ford Fusion. This year, new interior and safety features are available for the Mazda6.

Three trims are available: the Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.

The Mazda6 has a sporty, handsome design with angular headlights, a crest-shaped grille, and wide-mouth fascia. Sleek, curvaceous body lines give the Mazda6 a muscular, yet elegant look. The side mirrors have been revised to include turn signal indicators. Standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels and LED taillights. Heated side mirrors and a rear spoiler are also available.

Under the hood, there is still only one engine option in the United States (a Mazda6 with a diesel is sold abroad). The 184-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine comes from Mazda’s SkyActiv family of engines and makes 185 pounds-feet of torque. It is mated to a standard 6-speed manual or an available 6-speed automatic. SkyActiv engines feature direct injection and very high compression ratios for increased efficiency and responsiveness. Fuel economy estimates with the manual transmission are 25/37 mpg city/highway, while the automatic bumps those up to 26/38 mpg. An optional efficiency package adds available only on GT models adds a mild-hybrid i-ELOOP system that bumps fuel economy up to 28/40 mpg, which leads the segment.

Inside, the Mazda6 has a standard cloth cabin with a new steering wheel design, improved sound insulation, and a 60/40/split-folding rear seat. The center console houses a standard Mazda Connect multimedia system that can be controlled by a knob located between the front seats. Mazda Connect includes a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio, a USB port, HD radio, internet radio via a connected smartphone, and voice command capability. It can be upgraded with an integrated navigation system and a Bose premium audio system. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, push-button start, and cruise control. Also available are leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, and powered/heated front seats. The Grand Touring trim has a revised Premium Package available that includes Nappa leather sport seats, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, a unique “Chidori” stitch for the steering wheel, and accent interior lighting.

The Mazda6 earned a full five-star overall crash test rating from the NHTSA. Standard safety features include six airbags, antilock brakes, and electronic stability control. There is also plenty of available safety technology as well, including a Smart City Brake Support system with forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Grand Touring trim also comes with traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, and lane keep assist.
