New 2016 Nissan Murano

2016 Nissan Murano Overview

  • Completely redesigned in 2015 with new styling and better fuel economy
  • One of the most unique looking crossovers on the road
  • Seats up to five passengers (two rows)
We will say this about Nissan – when they go big, they go really big. And last year’s redesign of the Murano midsize crossover definitely qualifies as huge, taking a pretty conservative SUV and flipping it on its head with styling that some might see as whacky, but we see as brilliant. For 2016, the Murano takes a break and doesn’t see any changes of note.

The Murano kept many of the features and curves seen on the Resonance concept which make it one of the most uniquely styled vehicles being sold today. Large, curved front fenders sit behind “boomerang” style headlight clusters with LED daytime running lights. A blacked out portion at the rear of the Murano gives the roof a floating appearance, as if it’s levitating above the rear part of the vehicle. Chrome trim pieces extend from below the side doors to the front of the Murano, angling up sharply to almost meet the grille. The Murano’s new look pays fuel economy benefits as well – the new design is 16-percent more aerodynamic.

Under the hood, power comes from a 260-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 which is mated to a two-speed continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and standard front-wheel drive (an all-wheel drive system is optional). Thanks to the aforementioned improvements to aerodynamics and some weight lost in the redesign, fuel economy numbers have jumped 17-percent over the previous model, up to 21/28 mpg city/highway.

Four trim levels of the Murano are offered: S, SV, SL, and Platinum.

Inside the Murano’s V-shaped center console matches the V seen in the front grille on the outside. The Murano features “Zero-Gravity” seats for both front and rear passengers, with the front set offering heating or ventilation on higher trim levels. Standard features include dual zone automatic climate control, USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, push button start, a seven-inch display in the instrument panel, and NissanConnect with Mobile Apps which integrates with your smartphone. Also available are a navigation system with an eight-inch touch-screen, leather upholstery, and a Bose audio system.

The 2016 Murano earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS, their highest honor. It offers a standard backup camera, seven airbags, electronic stability control, and antilock brakes. Nissan’s Around View monitor system is optional, which displays a top down view of the Murano that helps with parking. Additional safety technology is also optional, including blind spot warning, forward collision warning, forward emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and rear cross-traffic alerts.
